"The Vegan Black Metal Chef"

The Vegan who what who, you ask? Say it with me: Vegan - Black - Metal - Chef. The Vegan Black Metal Chef (a.k.a Brian Manowitz) is just your typical metal nerd who has been a strict vegan for well over a decade. He loves to cook vegan food and he loves to write Black Metal music – thus his alter-ego was born.

I'm sure you are well aware of what being “vegan” entails, but just in case you don't know, it's a diet that excludes ALL products sourced from animals. This means no meat, fish, dairy, eggs, honey...etc. People have many reasons for becoming vegan that range anywhere from boycotting animal sourced foods in the name of animal cruelty to simply wanting to eat healthier. Non-vegans who are unaware of vegan cuisine can't imagine vegans eating anything much more than grass and that is one of the reasons why the Vegan Black Metal Chef exists...but what is Black Metal, you ask? Black Metal is an extreme form of Heavy Metal music which usually consists of a bunch of painted brutes with axes incorporating fast drumming, guitars, and monstrous sounding vocals. Pretty much the opposite picture of a gentle vegan, right? Not anymore...

Manowitz has been very successful at bringing attention to Veganism and showing people that there are many cuisine options to choose from, not just grass. One of the things I appreciate about The Vegan Black Metal Chef is that he doesn't “preach” or say things “should be” one way or another. Instead, he leads by example and is satisfied with the idea of just opening people's minds. He just does his thing and it's super popular! He has been gaining momentum in the cooking world and his show has toured North America, Europe, and Australia so far. The Vegan Black Metal chef has even been a guest on Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations.

Perhaps most importantly, he has a blast doing it and would be making his shows regardless of attaining fame or not. It's also worth pointing out that as a longtime close friend of Brian's, I can tell you that he has an interesting sense of humor and his show is a definite manifestation of that. Of course, there are people that don't understand the humor and find what he does offensive, but hey, you can't please everybody eh? Anyway, who needs to when you have a delicious plate of vegan Pad Thai summoned from the dark abyss, sitting in front of you?
